CLASSICAL CHRISTIAN CO-OP OPEN HOUSE MEETING
Friday, March 08, 2013 at 2:30 p.m. at Randle home
Attendance:  Shirley Alvarado, Tracie Bethea, Julia Cecil, Shawn McCowan, Sandra Murrillo, LaChrisha Randle, Terri Simpson
Open House will take place on Thursday, March 21st at 6:00 p.m. at The Chapel at Grossmont.   LaChrisha will check with Pastor John about two important items:  Can we set up at 5:00 p.m.?  Are we able to pin or tack items to the walls?
If we get approval from Pastor John, families should be at the church by 5:00 p.m. on March 21st to help with set-up.  Each family is responsible for helping their students prepare their presentations or displays and bringing them to the Open House.
Shirley emailed a flyer that families can use to invite family and friends.  There was some discussion about having our high school students assist as emcees for the event, but no final decisions were made.
Agenda for the Open House will be:
1.      Opening Prayer and Welcome
2.      Music Recital by Simpson family
3.      Student Presentations (approximately one hour)
Elementary Students
Middle School Students
High School Students
4.      View Displays
5.      Refreshments and Closing Prayer
The preliminary estimate for attendance is 60 people.  Each teacher discussed what students should be prepared to present or display at Open House.  The assignments are as follows:
Elementary students:  Sing vowel song.
Middle School students:
Science – Display human body posters.  Students may want to color in the body systems.
History – Recite the timeline and present their Civil War timelines.
Literature – Display book reports.
IEW – Display one or more of their essays.
Latin – Sing “O Come All Ye Faithful” in Latin.
High School students:
Anatomy – Present interactive body presentations using computer and display brain or eye experiments.
Biology – Display projects on Darwinism and DNA.
History – Present a song, rap, and mural.
Leadership – Display leadership project proposals, Spiritual Gifts assessments, and textbook materials.
Spanish – Present a movie trailer done in Spanish.
World Literature – Displays and essays on books chosen by students.
Food/refreshment assignments are as follows:
Shirley – sandwich rolls and cake from Costco (from co-op funds).  Shirley will also purchase bottled water and cups using co-op funds.
Shawn and LaChrisha – chips
Julia – salsa and veggies
Terri and Sandra – fruit
Tracie – large cooler of lemonade and veggies

Followup: We have approval from Pastor John for the 5pm set up time but as far as things on the walls he'd rather we use the blue tape as a loop on the back of whatever we are displaying.
Jonathan A., Jesse M. and Jonathan R. will be the MC's for the Open House.  Is there anyone that would be willing to volunteer to make a program for the open house that states the order of everything?  We can run off the copies using co-op funds.  Please let LaChrisha know if you are willing to take that on.

Hello C3 families,
another great (and tiring because of the time change) co-op day has been conquered.  It was great to see the students getting so into completing their projects for open house.  It's going to be a great event and I for one am looking forward to it.  Also we only have one co-op meeting and the Open House till Spring Break.  Lets go out on vacation with a bang by making the last co-op and the Open House exciting and memorable.

I

Wednesday, March 6, 2013

Good morning C3 families,
please be sure to read the entire page and have your students do the same.  I'm guilty myself of not having my students read it in its entirety but I should have them do so, so that no important information is missed.  I'm finding that a lot of the students are saying that they were not aware of certain homework assignments. If both you and your student reads their assignments there is ample coverage to know what needs to be done.

The hamburgers were a hit yesterday and needless to say the students loved them.  We will be having hamburgers again next week and we will stick with the same assignments to make things easy.  A special thanks to Shirley for always getting in that kitchen and making lunch happen.  Thanks to the other moms for stepping in where needed during lunch hour. And thanks to Terri for bringing cupcakes for no special reason, I know the students enjoyed them.  You guys all rock!

Also, it was good to have all of the special guest teachers and students yesterday.  It was great to see the Vannoy girls as they have been missed.  Also, its always good to see Michael, an old student who is doing great in his new college endeavors.  Hes a straight A student!  It gives me great hope for all of our future college students. And it is always a blessing to have the teaching help of the dads.  Thanks to Mr. Alvarado for stepping up to help in the economics class each week and thanks to Mr. Randle for coming for the second time to have a bible study on character with the young men.  We're so blessed to have the supportive, loving dads and husbands we have; not to take anything away from those dads who have not been able to come and help at co-op because they are busy financially supporting their families so that the privilege of home schooling can be enjoyed.  Husbands/dads rock too!

Open house is upon us.  Invite your loved ones and friends to show off what our students have accomplished this year.  We will discuss all of the details at this Fridays meeting.

Next weeks presenters will be:
Jonathan Randle
Jonathan Alvarado
Nathaniel Randle
Briana Beckman (yes you Briana)

QUESTIONS

6. List all the ways that Tom’s day-to-day life in Brooklyn in 1862 is different from your life
today. Is there anything about his life you wish were true of yours? Is there anything that
you are glad is different?
7. Imagine that you were Tom. Would you have taken both gold coins? Why or why not?
8. While Tom does not often mention his father’s death, what role does that loss play in Tom’s
life? How does it affect his relationship with Captain Ericsson? How does it affect his
feelings about the Monitor and the Union cause?
9. On page 106, Tom comments that “Captain Ericsson could think us to the moon if he
wanted to.” What does he mean? How does Avi, the author, speak directly to a modern
reader with this line?
10. On the way to Hampton Roads, the Monitor is nearly sunk during a storm. How does this
chapter build excitement about the coming battle? If the workmen had had time to
completely test and finish the boat, would the final battle have been as thrilling to read
about?
11. What if Tom had helped out the copperheads and given them what they wanted? How might
the course of the whole war been different?
12. Did Captain Worden do the right thing by bringing Tom on board the Monitor? Is it all right for children to be in a military battle?
13. Each side claims to have won the final battle. Who do you think won? Why?

Important Note:  We are scheduled to have a meeting this Friday, March 8th at 2:30 regarding the open house on March 21.
