Wow, the holidays are upon us.  No classes for 3 weeks, yahoo!  Yesterday was great!  A big thanks to Shirley for all of the planning and execution of yesterdays food and fun. It was a wonderful treat to have Ruthie McCowan  join us yesterday and a big thanks goes to her for helping Shirley to prepare the pizzas for the oven.  And thank you's also to all of the ladies that helped to execute getting the pizzas cooked.  You all did an awesome job of cleanup and we were able to leave early because of the willingness of the students to pitch in early and get it done.   The pizzas were great, the traditions were rich and it was awesome to hear of such diversity in every family, and the game was a blast!  We missed the Nacar's and hope that Jake is feeling better and of course we missed the Vannoy's and although we fully understand the absence, it will be good to see your return in January.  We will  return to classes on January 8th. I pray that everyone is blessed and is a blessing to those less fortunate during this Christmas and New Year.  Believe it or not we are so rich in our lifestyles and blessings, materially, physically and spiritually, and we need to be purposeful about sharing our wealth, in all 3 areas.  Don't be too hard on yourselves with those New Years Resolutions and remember that Jesus is the Reason for this season.
Here is the homework:

High School:

Spanish - Complete exercises 6.1, 6.2 and 6.3.

W. History- Please read unit unit 14 lessons 65-70 this week and review before we return to classes in January.  We will be having a jeopardy game, so know those answers.  Study the timeline for open house in January.  For open house you will also need to choose one of the lessons, your favorite or the most interesting to you, to present.

W. Literature- We are on to the next book which is "A Proud Taste for Scarlet and Minerva".  I suggest you start the book now so you can read it at your leisure instead of rushing through. Choose your best paper you have written thus far to display at open house also.

Biology
Module 6, complete all definitions for this chapter and/or the module 6 test.

Anatomy - Study the all the bones and know each for open house.  Ms. Shirley will be emailing a further assignment of which muscles each of you should know and memorize.  Be looking for that email. This is a good time to catch up on your coloring book assignments.  Maybe color one page a day.

Leadership- Work on your project and give a report on your success thus far to your parents and classmates if possible.  It was a great class and all of you did a bang up job.

Middle School:

Latin: Review all of lessons 1-6.  You will have a test covering lessons 6-10 on the first Tuesday back to classes, Jan. 8th.

Science: Students created a life-sized torso of themselves with several body systems.  I thought it might be nice to display these during the Open House we will have, so students may want to work more on them (in some cases make a new one since they may have destroyed it by the end of the day!).

IEW: Students created a draft of "The Telegraph." They need to add the Dress Ups and write a final version by the time we return in January. I may have students read their best essay during Open House.

History: Read Chapters "Daniel Webster's Youth" and "Webster's Speeches."  Write down 3 important ideas you learned in each chapter. We will be writing a little more on Webster when we return in January. Practice timeline facts/dates for Open House!

Literature: Read The Boy in the Alamo over the vacation.  According to the schedule we really should be done with the book upon return to classes in January.  Vocabulary will be sent via email.  Please write down 5 -7 facts that struck you as interesting as you read.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.  Hopefully we will be able to have that New Years day get together we talked about.  Remember its not about the gifts we receive but what we give this season that matters.  God gave his very best, He gave His only begotten son that whoever believes on Him will have everlasting life.... Lets keep that in mind and give our very best because of His great love and mercy towards us.  Love you all.

Good morning C3 families.  There's only 1 week left before Christmas break and what a great week we have coming up.  Wow time is really flying by, before you know it, we will be saying goodbye to this school year.

Please continue to keep the Vannoys in prayer for their move and hopefully we will see them this coming Tuesday.  If not, we pray the Vannoy's and all the C3 families have a wonderful break.

Next week, we will be playing the "White Elephant" game in our morning schedule instead of having presenters.  Please bring a wrapped gift, either something from your home, a toy you no longer use, a gag gift, etc, or a bought gift with a limit of $1 - $2 for the game.  Each person must have a gift to play and please understand that the object of the game is fun.  Understand that stealing of gifts is allowed in this game so don't become attached to any gift.  It's all in good fun.

Be sure that your high school students are reading the blog each week so they will be sure of their homework assignments.  A lot of the students are telling me that they did not read the blog so they weren't aware of their homework.  I realize that this is on them and not your responsibility but since we are committed to helping our children succeed and I know each of the moms reads the blog, it would benefit our students if we ensure that they are getting their homework assignments each week.  Believe me, I am guilty of this myself and have to remind myself to ask my student to read the blog.

Here is this weeks homework:

Hello C3 families,
only 2 more weeks until our Christmas break.  It was great to hear all that everyone was grateful for this morning and wonderful to hear the hearts of so many being developed, changed and fulfilled by our Lord.

It was also good to get back to the grind of learning and I for one was very encouraged by the thoughtful comments and questions from the students in both my World History and World Literature classes.  My prayer is that God will continue to stir their hearts to all that we discussed, as most of it was pratical to each of our own walks with the Lord although somehow our history was weaved into that discussion.  Moms, if your students have not had a chance to get to the book we are reading in literature, please if possible encourage them to continue to participate in the class anyway.  As we are reading historical fiction, the books I have chosen specifically correlate to the unit we are studying in the History class. We also get into the meat of literature devices, terms, etc, as well as vocabulary that they will need if only for the upcoming SAT's they will take.  In addition,  especially since most of the books I have chosen have either Christian themes and undertones or are blatantly Christian, they are applicable to our lives.  So even if your student has not read, they will get a wealth of knowledge while participating in the class from literature knowledge to historical knowledge to life application knowledge.

It looks like we have chosen to postpone the open house until after the holidays, which I know will allow us all to exhale, since we all know that December is already one of the busiest months of the year for most families.  Moms please continue to be diligent to check your email for updates and information specific to us moms.

It was good to see Jake back this week and of course all of the Vannoys were sorely missed.

Wednesday, November 14, 2012

Hello C3 families,
we made it through another class day.  Yesterday was good as always and it was a treat to have a guest speaker in the leadership class. Thank you Mr. Simpson.

I know we will all miss being together next week but it will be a welcomed break and I pray you all have a wonderful thanksgiving and that you are able to share the wealth of love, peace and provisions that the Lord has poured out on us all.  Even if some of us are struggling right now, and I realize that many of us are, we are still rich in comparison to the conditions of so many homeless, hungry and destitute people both here in America and in other countries.  So bless the Lord and share the wealth!

On a more somber and serious note, I would like to address a topic that is heavy on my heart right now.  I constantly have teachers letting me know, and I experience it in my own classes as well, that many students are not doing the work and dont seem to be concerned that they are not, as if they have been given an ok not to get any work done.  My prayer is that each student will begin to take responsibility for their education.  I know that we all have busy lives but the need to make time for your schooling is of great importance.  Wake up earlier, stay up later, cut a couple hours from tv or computer time.  Do what is necessary to get your school work done because in reality, it is only you that will suffer from not getting it done.  More importantly, every mom teacher who has voluntarily taken on the teaching of a class, spends her time prepping for that class.  That takes time and effort away from her family and other duties she has.  Dont make her feel as if she is wasting her time in doing so.  Why should we rise early, stay up late and/or take time away from other responsibilities to prep for a class when only a few bother to do the work and make the class time worth her time.  Not to mention that we get nothing out of teaching except the joy of watching you students learn.  Also, we know that everything we do should be done with excellence as unto the Lord.  So please begin to take a different look and approach to your school work, make it your own, it benefits only you.

Hello C3 families,
we are at the 9 week mark and moving right along.  Yesterdays certificate awards were well deserved and the "ceremony" went over well.  Students dont forget to work as unto the Lord, we are watching you and you may yet receive a certificate.

Dont forget if you would like to contribute to the missions to Jordan project, get your new or used coats, blankets, sweatshirts, shoes, or socks (new only) in good condition to Julie by Sunday.  This is an awesome cause and it will be a blessing to contribute.  Remember, according to our Lord, it is better to give than to receive.  And in giving to those in need, we are essentially giving to the Lord.

On another note, changes are definitely in store for our nation with the re-election of President Obama.  Please remember that the Lord commanded us as believers to pray for our nation, and our leaders.  Also, He commanded us to humble ourselves and pray, seeking His face for the healing of our nation.  It is past time for revival, we should be diligently praying for mercy, healing, revival, and a return to Christ for our nation.  It is our highest calling next to sharing the gospel and making disciples of men.  If you do nothing else with dilligence and excellence this year, do pray.  Pray as if your very life depended on it because it does.  I dont want to sound like an alarmist and frighten anyone, but I do want to alarm us to the fact, that if we had been in our rightful place of prayer, fasting and sharing the gospel, if we were even as concerned with spiritual things as we are with setting our DVR's to record our favorite tv show, or seeing the latest great flick or buying the latest iphone or other great device, we would not be seeing the falling away and deception of the hearts of man the way we are blatantly seeing it today.  Obamas campaign motto was "change", let us by our prayer, fasting and evangelizing be the ones who brings the change that matters.  I propose that we set a day each week, as part of the body of believers, to pray and fast on behalf of our nation.  Who's with me?

Homework this week is as follows

In light of that I will not give new vocab words for this week.  Write a brief synopsis of the book including some historical facts that you learned from the book and your thoughts on the book and why you did or did not enjoy the book.  If you did not read the book please do brief research on either Arabian horses, King Arthur, Septimania or the time period in which the story is set which is early medieval britain and be prepared to share it with the class.  Remember to do an internet search on who invented horseshoes to find out if the information in the book is historically accurate

Heres some quick flix of our awesome class day.  Enjoy!

Wow, what an awesome Class day we had yesterday.  We had a treat of chili instead of our usual special house burrito, and enough cupcakes for each student to have 3rds with some leftover, thanks to Ms. Alvarado for the chili and and Mrs. Simpson for the cupcakes.  Your hard work was a real blessing.  Happy Birthday to Aaron Bethea and Ezekial Vannoy.  We were all blessed to be able to share a moment of your special month with you.

I for one had great class days in both my world lit. and world history.  The students did a great job summarizing for history and although it was pretty obvious that not a lot of people read for literature it was still a great discussion as we applied some of the principles from this book to our lives.  What I saw of middle school science in my time in there seemed to go well, Mrs. McCowan is a great teacher as well as Stephanie, her alter ego.  Also, congratulations to Monica who won the jeopardy game in Mrs. Alvarado's anatomy class with 200+ points.  Way to go! Mrs. Murrillo's students did a very interesting experiment with mold and yeast and quite a few of us got to take a look at the mold under the microscope.  A lot more of us moms found mold to contribute to  the cause than first expected.  I know it was very out of the ordinary to find mold in our homes, hehe, but way to go ladies, me included.  Thanks again to Mrs. Alvarado who stepped in to teach the Leadership class yesterday.  Great job from what I saw and heard!

We hope and pray that the Nacar boys, and Mrs. Bethea are all feeling better today.  Please continue praying for them.  Also be sure and pray for Mikayla and Briana's volley ball tournament/s this week.  Im not sure if the tournments have already happened or not but Im sure they can use our prayers no matter what even if only for a safe return home.  The Vannoys, Briana, the Nacars and Mrs. Bethea were certainly missed this week and we will all be glad to see you all back next Tuesday.

BTW, I look forward to getting the student names, per our meeting discussion, from instructors this week.

Cleanup was a little harder this week with so many people missing, but as we worked together, we pulled it off.  Great job everyone.  A special thanks to the fellow who vacuumed the entire fellowship hall by himself.  That is usually reserved as a 2 man job, excellent work Jonathan Randle.  Thanks to Mrs. Cecil and Hosanna for stepping in for bathroom cleanup duty and thanks the nominated bathrooms moppers.  I dont think there was a floor that I didn't see Mrs. Cecil mop yesterday, what a whiz.  Special thanks always to Sandra who gets that sanctuary vacuumed first thing every Tuesday morning.  And of course thank you's go out to all who made an effort to pitch in.  You all rock!

Crazy hair/hat day was a hit and I was blessed to see so many people participate.  We had a little of everything.  Pictures to come so check back on the blog as new photos will definitely be posted.

Good morning C3'ers,
It was good to see everyone yesterday except of course Sarrah and Jake who were missed. We had another great day filled with learning, laughter and chatter, lots of chatter.  Parents please make sure especially that your high school students are reading this blog for themselves if only so that they may get their homework assignments.  And if you could check it behind them just as a backup to ensure that they and you know what their assignment is that would help keep them on track.  Also, it is excellent practice for their college years to check their assignments and follow on their own, especially if they ever take an online class.
Everyone is becoming very good at pitching in and getting that place in top shape at the end of the day!  Thanks for all of your hard work.
Julie Nacar is having a bonfire at her house friday of next week and all high schoolers and middle schoolers are invited.  It will be a great time for the students to get to know one another better outside of classes.  Please check your email for details.
Just a couple of reminders, please make sure all of our students know that there is no reason for any of them to be in the sanctuary except one or two when accompanied by an adult for cleaning purposes.  Also, please dont put anything into the toilets but toilet paper.  No paper towels or any other object besides tp should be in the toilets.

This weeks homework:

American History-  As a side note, it is really cool to see the chapters perfectly aligned with our literature reading, both for Sacagawea and now Key to Honor. The kids are seeing the same names come up in their history and literature, which makes for greater memory retention later when they see these names come up again as high school students. Awesome!

10/16/12

Hello C3 families,
we successfully completed week 6 of co-op.  Wow, what great presentations we are getting out of the students.  Im so impressed with the topics, the preparedness of the students, and even the speaking technique, especially for those who are in their first year of this.
The moms talked about altering the reward system to use another type of reward other than candy or no reward at all.  Please email me with your preferences so that Shawn and I can make the final decision.  Also, please check your calendars and let me know if December 12th from 4:30 - 7:00 will work out for you for an end of the semester open house.  We can talk about the details of the evening further once we get a date down in stone.  We will probably need to have another lunch meeting next week to discuss decisions made about reward system and open house details.
Mom instructors please let me know in the future if you have any praiseworthy class circumstances about any of your students from class day so that I can post it for the week.

Wednesday, October 10, 2012

Good morning C3 families,
we have another great co-op day under our belts.  This marks week 5 of our school year.  Congratulations to all of our wonderful speakers yesterday.  You all did a good job, especially of researching your specific topic.  We had a great day in middle school science this week, focusing on the respiratory system. We did an experiment that showed lung capacity.  We had lots of participation, and several students were able to blow in the tube to find their personal lung capacity.   Amazingly, Matthew Nacar had the largest lung capacity, that of a healthy adult!  In our time together I noticed what a wiz we have in Mariah who speedily subtracted fractions before the problem was even written down.  JesseMurrillo did a great job of leading the high school world history class, and the class seemed a lot more enthusiastic about answering questions....maybe we have the makings of a future professor.  I also witnessed Jonathan Alvarado leading the leadership discussion, again, awesome job and enthusiastic participation from the other students.  We had a small mishap in the fellowship hall yesterday.  I went around and asked who did it, not because the person was in trouble but so that the person would be responsible to clean up after themselves.  I was so proud of the person who came on their own and confessed and cleaned the mess without me ever getting to that person.  Some may think thats not a big deal but it takes real integrity to confess and be willing to own up to a mistake.  Good job!  (You know who you are). Mrs. Alvarado used a different approach this week in assigning different questions to each student and having them share the answers and trade information. That seemed to work beautifully and her praise was that each student was ready with their  specific questions answered and it seemed to give greater understanding with the experiments as well.  Awesome job anatomy students!  It was great to see the friendships developing between the middle schoolers when they decided to eat lunch together in the back elementary side room.  We just need to make sure there is periodic parental supervision during lunch.  Thanks to the Randle boys for always getting right to set up when we arrive on Tuesday mornings and thanks to the other male students who come after us but fall right in line to help with set up. Mikayla Vannoy was greatly missed yesterday and we all hope and pray that she is feeling back to normal today.   Also, as always everyone did an awesome job of after school tear down and cleanup.

I wanted to take a moment and stress the importance of memorization which has been very discounted in the school systems in recent years.  It does not take but minutes a day to have your students review vocabulary words, new science terms, vocabulary words for a language they are studying, timelines, math facts, etc. but it will make a world of difference in their schooling and what they get out of their subjects.  You will be amazed at the capacity of the brain to remember if you will have your student make and use flash cards for their different subjects and have them review the cards each day for a few moments.  Its how great musicians become great and how great athletes become and stay great, by practicing the same song or the same dunk or the same swing or throw or technique over and over and over again.  We all marvel at these amazing athletes or musicians  as though it is only talent that gets them to a place of greatness.  But it is talent and commitment to practice that gets and keeps them there.  We have talked about this before because it is the main premise behind Classical Conversations which we are modeling, but I just wanted to re-iterate it and allow those students who read the blog to consider that information as well.

The homework for this week is as follows:

High School:
Spanish - Hay, Interrogative words, Days & Months read chapter 3 pp 32-39 review and attempt excercises 3.4, 3.5, 3.6, & 3.7
