we have another great co-op day under our belts. This marks week 5 of our school year. Congratulations to all of our wonderful speakers yesterday. You all did a good job, especially of researching your specific topic. We had a great day in middle school science this week, focusing on the respiratory system. We did an experiment that showed lung capacity. We had lots of participation, and several students were able to blow in the tube to find their personal lung capacity. Amazingly, Matthew Nacar had the largest lung capacity, that of a healthy adult! In our time together I noticed what a wiz we have in Mariah who speedily subtracted fractions before the problem was even written down. JesseMurrillo did a great job of leading the high school world history class, and the class seemed a lot more enthusiastic about answering questions....maybe we have the makings of a future professor. I also witnessed Jonathan Alvarado leading the leadership discussion, again, awesome job and enthusiastic participation from the other students. We had a small mishap in the fellowship hall yesterday. I went around and asked who did it, not because the person was in trouble but so that the person would be responsible to clean up after themselves. I was so proud of the person who came on their own and confessed and cleaned the mess without me ever getting to that person. Some may think thats not a big deal but it takes real integrity to confess and be willing to own up to a mistake. Good job! (You know who you are). Mrs. Alvarado used a different approach this week in assigning different questions to each student and having them share the answers and trade information. That seemed to work beautifully and her praise was that each student was ready with their specific questions answered and it seemed to give greater understanding with the experiments as well. Awesome job anatomy students! It was great to see the friendships developing between the middle schoolers when they decided to eat lunch together in the back elementary side room. We just need to make sure there is periodic parental supervision during lunch. Thanks to the Randle boys for always getting right to set up when we arrive on Tuesday mornings and thanks to the other male students who come after us but fall right in line to help with set up. Mikayla Vannoy was greatly missed yesterday and we all hope and pray that she is feeling back to normal today. Also, as always everyone did an awesome job of after school tear down and cleanup.
I wanted to take a moment and stress the importance of memorization which has been very discounted in the school systems in recent years. It does not take but minutes a day to have your students review vocabulary words, new science terms, vocabulary words for a language they are studying, timelines, math facts, etc. but it will make a world of difference in their schooling and what they get out of their subjects. You will be amazed at the capacity of the brain to remember if you will have your student make and use flash cards for their different subjects and have them review the cards each day for a few moments. Its how great musicians become great and how great athletes become and stay great, by practicing the same song or the same dunk or the same swing or throw or technique over and over and over again. We all marvel at these amazing athletes or musicians as though it is only talent that gets them to a place of greatness. But it is talent and commitment to practice that gets and keeps them there. We have talked about this before because it is the main premise behind Classical Conversations which we are modeling, but I just wanted to re-iterate it and allow those students who read the blog to consider that information as well.
